“Low Carb Flu” anyone?

Some of you participating in the challenge may have just cut your normal daily carbohydrate intake dramatically by removing all grains and sugars from your diet. And, I know some of you are experiencing symptoms of what people call “the low carb flu.” Many people experience a mild version of this when they ask their body to switch from burning primarily carbs as energy to relying on fat as a primary fuel source instead.

For most people, this lasts only a few days, but it can last as long as 1-2 weeks, or slightly more. If you are feeling symptoms, you might need to take it a little easy on your workouts in the gym, and make sure you are getting adequate rest. Moreover, you might try to specifically add in some slightly starchier allowed foods to help ease you into the transition, such as sweet potatoes, parsnips, and rutabagas. This is especially important if you have an active or demanding job.

Also important, especially for those of you who aren’t trying to lose weight: You may have just cut out a substantial portion of your calories, so make sure you are eating enough. If you are exhausted, headachey, and feeling weak…you might just need more food.
